Rodrigo Salinas speaks about the legal implications for production companies of getting back to work during the coronavirus pandemic

Most shoots have been suspended in Brazil since authorities imposed lockdown measures in mid-March against Covid-19, with the exception of some news gathering, post-production and documentary work that nonetheless is limited to smaller crews. State and municipal governments are starting to define the road map for returning to business with the incremental opening of some sectors, video production included.

In the meantime, while the pandemic continues to unfold and industry safety protocols are still being drafted, there are minimum precautions that film and video crews will have to take to reduce their liabilities and avoid claims of negligence as they return to operations.

The entire production industry, from the boom operator to the network directors and insurers, is going to have to adapt their procedures, at least until widespread and effective vaccines are available. Attorneys at CQS, the legal counsel for some of the biggest production companies in Brazil, estimate that the changes that will be adopted because of the new coronavirus are likely to be temporary.
